How to Export Drone Footage for YouTube, Instagram, Stock

Every platform has different requirements. Using the wrong export settings means your grade gets destroyed by compression.

How to Export Drone Footage for YouTube, Instagram, Stock

Platform compression can destroy graded footage. Always create a ProRes 422 HQ master first, then export platform-specific versions. YouTube performs best with 4K H.264 at 40-60 Mbps, Instagram and TikTok need 1080p at 15-25 Mbps, and stock footage requires ungraded ProRes at original resolution.

You spent hours grading your drone footage. The colors look perfect, the contrast is dialed in, the shadows have detail. Then you upload to Instagram and it looks like it was shot through a dirty window. That is compression destroying your work, and it happens because you used the wrong export settings.

Always Export a Master First

Before making any platform-specific export, create a master file at the highest possible quality. Use ProRes 422 HQ or DNxHR HQ at your timeline’s original resolution. This is your archive copy that you can re-export from anytime without returning to your timeline.

YouTube Export Settings

YouTube handles 4K well and compresses 1080p aggressively. Upload in 4K even if your target audience watches at 1080p, because YouTube’s 4K-to-1080p stream looks better than its native 1080p stream.

  • Codec: H.264 or H.265
  • Resolution: 4K (3840x2160)
  • Frame rate: Match your source (24fps or 30fps)
  • Bitrate: 40-60 Mbps for 4K
  • Color space: Rec.709

YouTube’s compression is variable. Fast-moving drone flights get compressed harder than static shots. That high bitrate gives you headroom during the action scenes.

Instagram and TikTok Export Settings

Instagram and TikTok are brutal with compression. The trick is to start with the highest quality possible and let the platform compress from there.

  • Codec: H.264
  • Resolution: 1080p (1080x1920 for vertical)
  • Bitrate: 15-25 Mbps for 1080p
  • Frame rate: 30fps
  • Duration: Up to 3 minutes for Reels (Instagram extended Reels from 90 seconds to 3 minutes in January 2025)

Upload through the mobile app, not the web browser. The app handles compression differently and usually produces better results.

Stock Footage Export Settings

Stock footage is completely different. Buyers want the cleanest possible files to grade themselves.

  • Codec: ProRes 422 HQ (no H.264)
  • Resolution: Original resolution (5.3K if you shot 5.3K)
  • Color grading: NONE (basic corrections only)
  • Frame rate: Original (do not conform)

Never deliver graded footage to stock agencies. Buyers will not purchase footage with a baked-in creative look they cannot modify.

Export once, check the result after upload, and adjust. Every platform updates their compression periodically, so what works today might need tweaking next month.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does footage look worse on social media? Aggressive platform compression destroys color grading and detail. Wrong export settings exacerbate the problem.

Upload 4K to YouTube even if footage is 1080p? Yes. YouTube 4K-to-1080p downscale looks better than native 1080p compression due to higher bitrate headroom.

Stock footage format? ProRes 422 HQ at original resolution with no color grading. Buyers want clean files to grade themselves.

Why create a master file? ProRes archive lets you re-export anytime without returning to timeline if platforms change compression.

Upload via app or browser? Mobile app handles compression differently and typically produces better results than web upload.

How often do settings change? Platforms update algorithms periodically. Always check uploaded results and tweak as needed.
