Pricing Your Services

Pricing is where most new drone pilots stumble. Charge too little and you cannot sustain the business. Charge too much and you lose jobs to competition. Here is how to think about pricing roof inspections.

Market Rates

Residential roof inspections typically range from $100 to $250. The variation depends on your market (urban areas command higher prices), the scope of the inspection (basic visual vs. detailed report with annotations), and turnaround time.

Commercial roof inspections start at $300 and go up to $500+ for large flat roofs, warehouses, or multi-building properties. Thermal inspections command $500+ because the equipment investment is significant.

Bundle roof inspections with real estate photography. If you are already at a property shooting exterior photos for a listing agent, adding a roof inspection for an extra $100-150 takes 15 minutes of additional flight time. This is the highest-margin work you will do.

Pricing Models

Per-roof pricing: Flat fee based on roof size and complexity. This is the most common approach because clients prefer predictable costs. Create tiers: small residential ($100-150), medium residential ($150-200), large residential ($200-250), commercial ($300+).

Hourly pricing: Charge $100-150 per hour including flight time and report creation. This works for complex or unusual properties where scope is hard to predict.

Retainer pricing: Roofing companies that need 5-10 inspections per week prefer a monthly retainer. Offer a discounted per-inspection rate ($75-100) for a guaranteed volume commitment.

Factors That Affect Price

  • Roof size and complexity: More slopes, more features, more flight time
  • Pitch: Steep roofs are harder to photograph and require more oblique shots
  • Travel distance: Charge a travel fee for jobs beyond 30 miles
  • Turnaround time: Rush delivery (same day) adds 25-50%
  • Report detail: Basic image delivery vs. annotated PDF report

Do Not Race to the Bottom

The biggest mistake new pilots make is undercutting the market to win jobs. If you charge $50 for a roof inspection, clients assume your work is worth $50. Price fairly, deliver excellent results, and build a reputation for quality. Clients who care about price alone will always find someone cheaper. Clients who care about quality will pay your rate.
