Pricing and Contracts
Construction drone work has three pricing models. Pick the right one based on the project type and client relationship.
Pricing Models
Per-visit pricing: Charge a flat rate for each site visit. Best for one-time surveys or infrequent monitoring.
| Service | Price Range |
|---|---|
| Progress photos (basic) | $200-400 |
| Progress photos + orthomosaic | $500-1,000 |
| Full mapping with volumetrics | $1,000-3,000 |
| 3D modeling | $1,500-4,000 |
| Thermal inspection | $500-1,500 |
Monthly retainer: Fixed monthly fee for a set number of visits and deliverables. Best for ongoing projects. Provides predictable income for you and predictable costs for the client.
| Package | Monthly Rate | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Basic monitoring | $800-1,500 | 4 photo visits/month |
| Standard mapping | $1,500-3,000 | 2 orthomosaic flights/month + photos |
| Premium full-service | $3,000-6,000 | 4 mapping flights/month + volumetrics + 3D models |
Project-based pricing: Bid on the entire project duration. A 12-month commercial project might be worth $15,000-40,000 over its lifetime.
What to Include in Your Contract
A construction drone services contract should specify:
- Scope of work: Exactly what deliverables you will provide (orthomosaic, DEM, volume calculations, progress photos, 3D model)
- Flight schedule: How often you will visit the site (weekly, biweekly, monthly)
- Deliverable format: File types and delivery method (shared folder, FTP, email)
- Turnaround time: How quickly deliverables are provided after each flight (typically 24-48 hours)
- Accuracy specifications: Expected accuracy based on your equipment and methods
- Weather policy: What happens when weather prevents a scheduled flight
- Site access: Who coordinates site access and safety orientations
- Insurance requirements: Your liability coverage and any additional insured requirements
- Payment terms: Net 15 or Net 30, invoicing schedule
- Termination clause: How either party can end the agreement
Pricing Strategy
Start competitive, then raise rates as your portfolio grows.
Your first few construction clients are references. Price slightly below market rate to win them, deliver exceptional work, and use their testimonials to justify higher rates on the next project.
Never race to the bottom on price. The cheapest drone pilot on a construction site is usually the least reliable. Contractors value consistency and quality over savings. A pilot who shows up on time every week, delivers clean data within 24 hours, and formats deliverables for immediate use is worth twice the rate of someone who is cheaper but unreliable.
Getting Paid
Invoice immediately after delivering each set of deliverables. Do not wait until the end of the month. Construction companies process invoices on a schedule. If you miss the current cycle, you wait 30-60 days for payment.
Include your certificate of insurance, a W-9, and any other documentation the contractor requires with your first invoice. These administrative requirements are common in construction and delay payment if not provided upfront.
